Gone are the days of a engine belt driven water pump on late model BMW's. The BMW engines inline 6 cylinder N51 N52 N54 N55 are equipped with electric water pump. This allows the DME to fully control and modulate the coolant flow through the engine without dependency on RPM. This electric design allows for engine power output efficiency and balanced cooling responsibilities for the engine. More cooling power is required on demand for turbocharged engines such as the E90 E60 N54/N55 vehicles. Failing Water Pump Warning Signs The electric water pump tends to fail after 50,000 miles and the early warning signs are the yellow engine temperature light which will then turn red when the car is overheating. The heat will no longer blow hot due to low coolant circulation and the coolant level is below minimum. Once the water pump fails the car will enter fail safe mode to prevent engine damage. The common fault codes stored in the DME are 2E82 Electric ... read more

The E46 M3 beauty is truly timeless and arguably the best BMW M3 ever made. The S54 high revving engine redlines at 8,000 rpm producing 343hp without the aid of forced induction. Although the S54 is a well engineered engine, it does have some flaws and Vanos is top of the list. There are several possible Vanos failures and this applies to Z3 Z4 M models equipped with S54B32 engines. Camshaft Sprocket Bolts The fillister head screws that goes on the camshaft sprockets will get loose over time allowing the bolt to puncture a hole through the block or valve cover. The sheared bolts can also cause the timing chain to skip and snap resulting in permanent engine damage. The cam gear bolts have been updated by BMW to prevent this catastrophic failure and we suggest having the bolts upgraded during your Inspection II service. Cam Gear Bolts Exhaust Camshaft Hub and Vanos Oil Pump The exhaust hub contains two tab ... read more

The 4x4 warning light, ABS and traction control deactivated indicators came on all at once for this E83 BMW X3. This customer has also been getting drivetrain vibrations and juddering on acceleration. MINHS Automotive is well versed in repairs on BMW drivetrain and will be evaluating the xDrive system. What is BMW xDrive? BMW xDrive is a full-time all-wheel drive system with the transfer case being the core component. The transfer case works by directing power from the transmission to both the front and rear differentials. xDrive can make a trip on snowy roads an easier time on you and your car. We’ve determined that the transfer case assembly has failed internally due to a failed chain and has a stored fault code 5F3A Transfer Case Malfunction. A complete case replacement is in order which comes with a new actuator motor. Transfer Case Maintenance We recommend performing the transfer case oil change every 60,000 miles ... read more

A rattling noise from the timing cover, all engine cylinders misfiring, car died and won't restart or extended engine cranking time are all symptoms of a failed timing chain tensioner. This particularly applies to Volkswagen Audi 2.0 TSI engines from 2008-2013 with engine code CCTA, CBFA, CAEB and CPMA which comes with the inferior chain tensioner. We now dive in by removing the front nose of the car and have the timing covers removed. The TSI timing chain tensioner has been updated several times due to their failure rate. The tensioner in question is highlighted in purple. When this component fails, it applies less tension causing the timing chain to get loose and rattle. Once the timing chain jumps timing, being that this is an "interference engine", it can lead to catastrophic engine failure as the internal engine components collide against each other, e.g. intake or exhaust valve making contact against the piston. To avoid a costly engine failur ... read more

The owner of this R53 Mini cooper attempted to find the coolant leak on his car after having to repeatedly top-off the coolant and replacing the thermostat and gasket. We’ve identified the leak to be coming from the water pump weep hole. This W11 engine is equipped with a supercharger where the water pump is mounted onto, a tedious location to get to. We’ve dismantled the front nose of the car to gain access to the water pump. After the water pump is installed, we’ll be flushing out the wrong coolant the customer has been adding with BMW anti-corrosive coolant, formulated to properly protect the engine internals of a MINI Cooper. This MINI is fully reassembled and ready to hit the road
